Looking at the Chapter Opener, I am distracted by the treatment of the Photo. The split images seem to cut off 2 good images. Also that white line in the middle of the Verso Page is very distracting. I ask Why did the designer choose to do this. Taking those 2 images away, I am left with a type design that needs to be improved on. – That said, the timeline is a lot more successful. I like the way this timeline is organized, my one suggestion is to have more contrast between the United States and World information colors. At first glance they look too similar. – The organization of the Recto Page text is acceptable, it reads well, the blue is a nice tint. I would bump up the importance of Essential Question text, move it up and give it more emphasis. This is most important compared to WYWL and FOW. The icons look out of place. I would make them a lot smaller, 80% Black. The size and style of the icons look like it belongs more to a Middle School book.
The 2nd Spread, looks fairly successful but needs to be refined further. That said, it looks somewhat crowded. It has to do with the proportions of the page elements and how close everything is to the trim. We need to air things out a little bit and chunk information better. Some suggestions. The Title treatment needs a little more air around the title. I suggest planting the Section Number treatment in that space of the Title. Okay for it to be Blue. The lead in text needs more emphasis, since this is sub-text to the title. On the Verso Page (left page), the major column feels too wide. That gray box is visually taking up too much space giving it too much emphasis. The photo at the bottom of the Verso page is a little awkward where it is placed. It is tricky to have text wrap around a photo which sits on the left of the column.
On the Recto Page (right page), the 2 column grid is inconsistent to the Verso. Keep the grid system the same. You can have the Verso Recto use a grid that mirrors one another or use the same grid through out. You would only vary the grid on a page if you are trying to separate the information from the rest of the text, such as a feature page planted within a section

The Digital Screens are successful in it’s approach to type hierarchy and design. It feels clean and contemporary, and easy to read.
