The Weird Words and Phrases Designers Use to Test Their Fonts - WIRED - Leah Davis

I found an extremely interesting article on WIRED by Ben Schott from 2017 that interviews a few type designers on the words and phrases they use to assess their fonts. The words and phrases chosen are typically used to stress-test a specific aspect of the type - be it kerning, glyphs with both straight and rounded edges, or the successfulness of ligatures.

One of the most interesting things I discovered upon reading this article was that one type designer named Verena Gerlach who designed a font called FF Sizmo among others, said she kerns all of her created fonts in Polish because "If you kern a font in Polish...it will work perfectly in almost every other language".

I definitely recommend you take a look at this article if you're interested in designing your own typeface as you could pick up some neat tips and tricks, or if you are purely interested in the strange phrases designers use to test their fonts.
