3D Type Final: April Shiel

The words chosen were No Kill. In this case, meaning the idea of a No Kill Dog Shelter.
It's a bit of a myth, because No Kill Shelters don't actually operate under a strict no euthanasia policy. They operate under a policy that limits how many they're allowed to do per year, something like 10%. There are still good dogs dying in No Kill Shelters. These ones were ones that I loved.

I went through many different creative processes with this project and had a lot of fun experimenting with what would work best. My original idea, polaroids and string, upon a test run didn't burn the way I liked (there was too much smoke and the string didn't carry the flame effectively). As well as the fact that when all put together, it looked too neat, to much like an art project. The next test was paper and string, but paper burned too quickly and string still had the same problem.
What we ended up using was cardstock, coated in tape, linked together by a blue ribbon to carry the flame. That way, as they burned and fell down the ground, they would keep burning for longer, symbolizing how the grieving process continues on. I went for an unfinished aesthetic deliberately, wanting to carry the idea that this was something that was under construction, never finished, because the work was also never done. There will always be more dogs that are lost, buried under the success stories. I used a blue ribbon to carry the flame because blue is supposed to symbolize heaven and resting in peace. The song in the background is Fantasia on a Theme.
