Alina Rudnick: "Self" 3D type with First Example
Alina Rudnick
My concept was to originally use the three words: Mind, Body, and Soul. I thought it would be interesting to represent each along with the word. I really took what was said last week to heart and trimmed it down to just being "self" which I think really was a better choice because the first concept already took me a fairly long time to do haha.
for Mind: I decided to go with the stuffing idea, I used cotton balls for it though instead of pillow stuffing, although I think it would give off the same effect. This was the represent the various haze in the mind and general thoughts running around. This is the one I chose to do first for the letter example because I had all the tools available. This will be shown down right at the very bottom. *
for Body: I wanted to think of things that made up the body I thought up either blood or bones. I'm thinking of using the red jello for blood for this because it'd be easy to cut and with the new material I'm using for the letters I don't want anything that is liquid or something that will bounce around and be too solid.
for Soul: I always think of a soul being someone's life energy or light inside a person, thus I wanted to use lightbulbs inside of the letters to make that glow. I'm not sure yet if I want to use larger bulbs or if I want to do small christmas tree looking lights, but it will be something like that. I am also debating adding small sheets of tracing paper inside the letters, over the lights to give a kind of ethereal, faded look that I think more represents the soul. I still think I'm going to go for simple clear/white christmas lights or something.
Moodboard:
here is my moodboard that shows the way I want to display the pieces as well as possible examples to use when I am actually making the materials to put inside the letters. I used gotham black for my letters in the first concept because it turned out to have a nice thick weight that I could add my content into.
Old Written/sketched out concepts:
*First concept:
I went with grafix acetate paper because it was completely clear and exactly what I needed and didn't require some kind of seeking out or taking some workshop in order to figure out how it worked or was dangerous. It worked a lot better than expected to be honest.
I went with the mind FIRST because as I've said, I had access to all the tools, the paper that I bought, glue, and cotton balls. You can look back at my "mind" section to read about what I did for this since it pretty much explains the process. I added the foggy mind clouds inside the acetate paper stencils I made with glue and adding stripes of papers to print outs of the letters in the gotham black font.

Old Written/sketched out concepts:
here it shows my general concepts as well as how I plan to execute the specific visual and technical aspects of my ideas. not much changed here except I decided on using the red jello for blood for body and instead of the thought bubbles for mind I used the cotton balls. All of the words are all now just "self".

I haven't glued on the top yet because I'm not fully confident on this format although I do have the tops made out.
I'm not sure if I want to do the word "self" 3 different times with different materials or just layer the other two materials thinly over the first thing to have it all contained in one letter and add the covers of them over that final one. I feel like doing the letters two more times would be tedious and kind of unnecessary but feedback on this is appreciated

Even though we discussed this extensively in class, I want to make an additional comment acknowledging how well this documentation shows us the project and process; great communication that is understandable and aids in communication and exchange among the participants.
